Does each school have its own specific set of recruiting standards?

Yes. While there are many nuances in recruiting and no standards are truly set in stone, each school has a set of academic and rowing standards that they are looking for in their recruits. Given that these vary from school to school, achieving certain academic marks and ERG scores will drastically improve an athlete's chances of getting recruited to a specific school.

When should I first make contact with college coaches?

At the earliest, September 1st of your Junior year. Despite this, the majority of official visits are held during the fall of an athlete's Senior year, therefore there is a lot of time between an athlete's initial contact with coaches and when recruitment takes place. The correct approach during this time can make all the difference.
